Lakers go 2-1 in Florida

Iowa Lakes Community College softball team played three tough games Tuesday. They dropped the first game to Mott Community College 9-6 in nine innings and the second game 10-9 against South Suburban College. The Lakers won the night cap 10-6 over Ripon College JV. The Lakers are now 6-7 on the season.

Game One: MCC 10, ILCC 9 (9 innings)

Mott Community College jumped out to an early 3-0 lead over the Lakers. They led off with a homerun before the next two batters got on base. With one out, the following batter hit a single to left field that was errored, which allowed two runs to score and that batter to get to third. The Lakers worked out of the inning, getting the next two batters out.

The Lakers got things going in the bottom of the third when Lexi Pallisco was hit by a pitch. Sullwold lined out to left field and Desiree Lopez singled to the shortstop. Leilani San Pedro walked to load the bases before Kacie Salazar singled to center to put the Lakers first run on the board. With the bases still loaded, Kaitlin Walsh doubled to left to score both Lopez and San Pedro. Laurie Custard walked to again load the bases to bring up Montanna Popp. She doubled to left field to bring in the final two runs of the inning.

The score remained 5-3 until the top of the sixth when Mott scored two runs to tie the game back up. In the seventh inning, Mott scored another run in the top of the seventh to take the lead. With their backs against the wall, San Pedro led off the bottom of the inning with a double to right field. Kaitlin Walsh sacrificed San Pedro, who scored on the play to send the game into extra innings.

Neither team scored in the eighth inning to bring on the ninth. Mott Community College scored three runs in their half of the inning to go up 9-6. Unfortunately, the Lakers went down in order in the bottom of the ninth to end the game.

Yasmine Nix (0-1) took the loss for the Lakers. She pitched four innings, giving up five runs, four earned. She allowed eight hits, hit one batter, and struck out one. Naomi Tolmachoff pitched the first five innings, giving up three runs, one earned. She allowed seven hits, one walk, and struck out two.

Montanna Popp was 2-3 with two hits and two runs batted in. Kacie Salazar was also 2-3 with a run scored and a run batted in. Kaitlin Walsh had three runs batted in.

Game Two: SSC 10, ILCC 9

The Lakers scored early in game one when Sullwold led off with a double. Lopez singled to right field to score Sullwold and put the Lakers up 1-0. Unfortunately, South Suburban scored two runs in the bottom of the first to put themselves up 2-1.

Sullwold reached in the third on a Bulldog error. With two outs, she stole second and then scored on a San Pedro triple. Salazar hit a line drive single to right field to score San Pedro and tie the ballgame. Walsh singled before Popp walked to load the bases. The Bulldogs threw a wild pitch to score Salazar and advance the other runners. Custard singled to left field scoring both Walsh and Popp and putting the Lakers up 6-3. South Suburban quickly struck back, scoring three runs in the bottom of the third to tie the game up at 6-6.

The Lakers got things going again in the top of the sixth. Sullwold reached on an error by the Bulldogs, which advanced her to second. Lopez bunted and reached on an error before San Pedro hit a hard ground ball up the middle to score Sullwold. San Pedro then stole second and advanced to third on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Salazar, which scored Lopez. Walsh quickly followed with a sacrifice fly of her own to score San Pedro and put the Lakers up 9-6.

With their backs against the wall, the Bulldogs scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh. They did this on three hits and two free bases.

The Lakers did not score a run in the top of the eighth, but South Suburban did to win the game 10-9.

Bibiana Rosales (2-4)  took the loss for the Lakers. She pitched 2.1 innings, allowing three runs, one earned on two hits, one walk, and three hit batters. Sullwold pitched a majority of the game, 5.1 innings. She gave up four runs, two earned on six hits, two walks, and striking out four.

San Pedro was 3-5 in the game, with a triple, two runs batted in, and one run scored. Salazar was also 2-5 with two runs batted in and one run scored.

Game Three: ILCC 10, Ripon JV 6

The Lakers again came out firing in their third game of the day. Lopez drew a one out walk and advanced to third on a double off the bat of San Pedro. Walsh hit a two out single to left field to score both runners and put the Lakers up 2-0. Ripon JV answered in their half of the inning with four runs.

Iowa Lakes got fired up in the third inning, scoring seven runs. Lopez reached on a Ripon error, stole second, and then scored on a San Pedro homerun. Salazar followed with a double and scored on a Walsh single to right field. Walsh advanced all the way to third base on the play at home and then scampered across the plate on a single from Custard. Kleis was hit by a pitch to load the bases back up before Sullwold cleared the bases to put the Lakers up 9-4.

The Lakers scored their final run of the game in the fourth inning when San Pedro was awarded first base on catchers interference. San Pedro  stole second and advanced to third on a Salazar ground out before scoring  on a Popp single. Ripon also scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth to make the score 10-6.The scored remained this way for the rest of the game, completing the Iowa Lakes win.

Naomi Tolmachoff got the win for the Lakers. She allowed two runs, one earned, on six hits and striking out one. Julia Sullwold pitched the first two innings. She gave up four runs, three earned, allowing four hits, walking three, and striking out three.

San Pedro again led the Lakers offensively, going 3-3. She had a double, homerun, two runs batted in, and three runs scored. Sullwold was 2-4, hitting in three runs.

The Lakers will be back in action Thursday, March 15th. They will take on Cuyahoga Community College at 9:00 AM EST, Illinois Valley Community College at 11:00 AM EST, and Madison College at 1:00 PM EST.
