Kirkwood Takes Two From Lakers

Iowa Lakes Community College traveled to Kirkwood Community College on Sunday for two games. The Eagles won game one 17-7 in five innings and game two 10-1. The Lakers are now 14-23 and 5-11 in conference.

Game One: KCC 17, ILCC 7 (5 innings)

Kirkwood got things started in the first inning, scoring one run on two hits. The Eagles scored another six runs on five hits, one walk, and one error in the second and five runs on two hits and four free bases in the third.

The Lakers made things interesting in the bottom of the third, scoring seven runs. Desiree Lopez reached second on an Eagle error to start the inning. Kacie Salazar then homered to center to put the Lakers on the scoreboard. Kaitlin Walsh got things going again for the Lakers with a single, followed by a single from Bibiana Rosales, and a walk by Montanna Popp to load up the bases. Kenlee Frank singled to score Walsh before Rosales scored on a Lexi Pallisco walk. Julia Sullwold and Lopez each singled to make the score 11-6. Leilani San Pedro hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score the final run for the Lakers.

Kirkwood quickly responded by scoring six runs in the top of the fourth. They did this on three free bases and four hits, including one homerun.

Yasmine Nix took the loss for the Lakers. She allowed seven runs, three earned, on seven hits and one walk in two innings. Bibiana Rosales pitched one inning, allowing seven runs, all earned, on three hits, four walks, and two hit batters. Naomi Tolmachoff pitched the final two innings, allowing three runs on three hits and one hit batter. Kacie Salazar led the Lakers, going 1-3 with a homerun and Julia Sullwold was 2-4.

Game Two: KCC 10, ILCC 1

The Eagles quickly scored two unearned runs in the top of the first inning. Iowa Lakes scored a run of their own in the bottom of the first. Sullwold led off with a single, stole second, and advanced to third on a base hit from San Pedro. Salazar walked, before Sullwold scored on a sacrifice fly by Walsh.

Kirkwood tacked on three runs in the top of the second on three hits, including a homerun. Both teams remained scoreless until the Eagles scored one run in the top of the fifth. Kirkwood scored their final four runs in the top of the seventh on six hits.

Yasmine Nix took the loss for the Lakers. She allowed ten runs, eight earned in six innings on fourteen hits and three walks. Naomi Tolmachoff pitched one inning and allowed just one hit. Julia Sullwold, Leilani San Pedro, Kaitlin Walsh, and Emily Owen each had a hit for the Lakers.

The Lakers are due to play at home all week. They will be taking on Marshalltown Community College on Tuesday at 3:00 and 5:00 PM, Iowa Central on Wednesday at 2:00 and 4:00 PM, North Iowa Area Community College on Friday at 2:00 and 4:00 PM, and Des Moines Area Community College on Saturday at 1:00 and 3:00 PM.
